How does Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing work?

Er:YAG fractionated laser is emitted to the epidermal layers of the skin in an “island-like” setting where laser injury is caused in equal proportions across the surface of the skin, while the surrounding tissue cells remain intact. The ablated treatment areas engage the body’s wound-healing response to stimulate fibroblasts to activate the production of new collagen.  

The method of channelled ablation versus full-field ablation of the skin yields highly favourable advantages for the patient and their treatment experience. It requires less downtime and less discomfort while still initiating neo-collagenesis: the process of skin remodelling.

What can I expect during and after my Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Most patients find laser resurfacing treatments quite tolerable, experiencing more of a heat/prickly sensation rather than pain.  To overcome this we use a cool compressor that blows cold air on the area and can also apply topical anaesthetic if requested, though most find this unnecessary.  

After the treatment, it is normal for the skin to feel quite warm for up to 24 hours (similar to a sunburn). We recommend avoiding all heat exposure for the first 48 hours and maintain sun protection ongoing.  Peeling of the skin is dependent upon the level of resurfacing that has been performed and can range from very mild flaking for a few days to significant peeling for up to 10 days.  This will all be discussed prior to your treatment in a thorough consultation. 


How many treatments are required?

The amount of treatments required depends on what is being treated and how the procedure is approached (e.g ablative versus non-ablative). Often patients prefer not to have any downtime after their treatments therefore a gentler approach (non-ablative) is taken and requires more treatments to produce the desired result. The majority of treatments however are based on the stimulation of collagen production and require 3-4 sessions 1 month apart to achieve optimal results. We are stimulating your natural collagen production, so maintenance from time to time is highly encouraged for longer lasting results.
