What is Acne?
Acne is a disorder that affects the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles. The small holes in your skin (pores) connect to oil glands under the skin. These glands make an oily substance called sebum. The pores connect to the glands by a canal called a follicle. Inside the follicles, oil carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. A thin hair also grows through the follicle and out to the skin. Sometimes, the hair, sebum, and skin cells clump together into a plug. The bacteria in the plug cause swelling. Then when the plug starts to break down, a pimple grows.
What causes Acne?
Acne is a common skin disease that affects most people at some time during their lives. It is caused by factors including hormonal changes, certain medications, life style and the use of certain cosmetic products.
Acne is most common in adolescents although for some people it may only first appear in their mid twenties and can even persist into middle age. People often squeeze spots and blemishes because of their unpleasant appearance. This can however cause increased inflammation and in extreme cases lead to permanent scars.
How does Laser Acne Treatment work?
Developments in laser technology now offer a breakthrough in the treatment of active acne and acne scarring. For active acne on your body and face, Fotona’s laser reduces inflammation by using photo-selective absorption and highly-controlled heating effects. Fotona’s high powered Nd:YAG laser penetrates your skin without causing any injury to a safe, optimal depth where it thermally affects the overactive sebaceous glands, which are often responsible for causing acne. For mild to moderate acne a single treatment is sufficient to suppress acne for up to three months or even longer. For severe acne more frequent treatments are required and continuous improvement is seen over the following few months.
In addition to Fotona’s thermal penetration abilities, the Nd:YAG acne laser accelerates your skin’s natural healing process and stimulates collagen remodelling which is important for your long-term acne treatment. Combining Fotona Erbium Yag laser peels with these treatments intensify the results and help to minimise previous scarring and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic and potentially life-disruptive disorder primarily of the facial skin, often characterised by flare-ups and remissions. Many have observed that it typically begins any time after age 30 as a redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. In some cases, rosacea may also occur on the neck, chest, scalp or ears. Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear. Left untreated, bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue.
How does the Rosacea Treatment work?
Fotona Nd:YAG laser is indicated for the treatment of vascular damage to the surface of the skin caused by conditions like rosacea. Fotona treats vascular irregularities by coagulating the blood vessels that are visible on the surface of the skin. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory reaction to reactive oxygen radicals within the skin cell system. The Fotona Nd:YAG laser has a 1064 nm wavelength that can effectively treat a wide range of vascular issues including Rosacea. Fotona’s Nd:YAG laser uses the Long Pulse (LP pulsation) setting to target red, purple, and violet pigmentation in the blood vessels of the skin by delivering controlled laser energy to coagulate them, thus reducing them in size and intensity.
What can I expect during my treatment?
Fotona SP Dynamis laser treatments for rosacea are quick and effective. Most patients require a series of treatments ranging anywhere from a single session for small areas or more monthly intervals until the discolouration has subsided. Patients can expect to feel a zapping sensation accompanied by heat, much like the snap of a rubber band. Fotona is a unique system that allows practitioners to provide customised treatment options for patients according to the characteristics of the areas they are looking to treat. This customisation is done by adjusting the laser parameters to effectively destroy dilated blood vessels associated by their size, depth, and colour.
